Movie and Tv show example

Greek mythology goes beyond just reading and writing. Movies,Tv shows and even musicals can adapt Greek mythology in plenty of different ways. One of the first Greek mythology movies I was introduced to was Disney's Hercules. It's a great kids movie, although it's incorrect when depicting the myths and even names. Hercules is the Roman name of the original Heracules, Although it is very close. The movie also gets Heracules origin wrong as he is born of a mortal mother and Zeus, not Hera and Zeus. On the other hand you can have rated M or rated R adaptations like Netflixs Kaos. The Netflix original shows what it would be like to have the Greek gods ruling over the modern world. The gods in the show will kill without mercy and do whatever they please. Truly depicting their cruelness that myths have told before. The show also adapts the myth of Orpheus and Euridice through a modern lens.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians adaptations

I wanted to give this section to mainly highlight the Percy Jackson series. For more information surrounding Percy Jackson check out the modern adaptations page. The series has been compared to the Harry Potter franchise but hasn’t seen the same success. It was first adapted into a movie in 2010 whiched covered the first book. The movies have been criticized by the author and fans as it does not adapt the books very well. The movies themselves do a decent job at depicting Greek mythology. It was next adapted into a musical in 2014. The musical was well received by fans and non fans. Popularity of the musical grew and even debuted on Broadway in 2019. The latest adaptation aired in 2023 as an eight episode tv show on Disney plus. The TV show gained mixed reviews as it changed a few moments from the book. Despite the mixed reviews it was greenlit for a season 2 which will adapt the second book from the original five Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.
