Modern day adaptations

Modern day books and stories

2000 years later and Greek mythology is still relevant in storytelling today. There are stories that have been written by modern day authors. Typically due to these stories being over 2000 years old, changes have been made. One of these stories is The song of Achillesby Madeline Miller. This story adapts the myth of Achilles as mentioned in the Stories(sight) page with added romance. Another modern day adaptation of a myth is Circe by Madeline Miller. Circe, who is typically a sort of antagonist in Greek mythology is adapted as a more sympathetic and relatable character in this Novel. Making Circe a relatable character in the book reflects how morals and challenges have changed since ancient greek making it an interesting adaptation.

Myth in modern day

A different type of modern day adaptations are Greek gods and monsters in modern times . A more realistic, relatable book is The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break by Steven Sherrill. This book tells the story of the minotaur in America living in a trailer park as a line cook. This book stands out as it is the minotaur from Greek mythology who has lived for thousands of years and making a life in America. A more well known book series is Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. This book series centers around Percy Jackson who is named after the Greek hero Perseus as he goes to a summer camp for demi-gods. Monsters from ancient times often come back to life such as Medusa, the minotaur, the sphinx, etc. This book is more suitable for a younger audience, although it tackles more adult themes such as abuse, war, PTSD, and dysfunctional families.
